Pediatric Occupational Therapy, Speech-Language Therapy & Integrated Support

Our occupational therapy is sensory motor driven and nervous system attuned.

While traditional OT models may focus on handwriting and fine motor tasks, our work begins with the foundational systems that make those skills possible. We prioritize whole-body development, strengthening postural stability, motor planning, sensory integration, visual-spatial processing, and regulation.

Rather than asking a child to perform when their nervous system is overwhelmed, we first support felt safety and organization in the body. From there, attention, flexibility, and problem solving naturally expand.

When appropriate, we design individualized sensory informed regulation plans to help children maintain balance across home, school, and community environments. These supports are integrated into real life settings (i.e., home and school), not confined to a therapy room.

We treat the body, nervous system and relationships with others first, so higher-level connection, learning, and participation can follow.

You may consider an occupational therapy evaluation from SOTB if you’re noticing:

  • Difficulty with attention or sustaining engagement

  • Frequent meltdowns, overwhelm, or big reactions

  • Sensory sensitivities
    (noise, clothing, textures, movement)

  • Sensory seeking behaviors
    (constant movement, crashing, chewing, spinning)

  • Challenges with transitions

  • Difficulty sitting upright or maintaining posture

  • Clumsiness, poor coordination, or frequent falls

  • Struggles with motor planning
(knowing what to do but not how to organize the body to do it)

  • Avoidance of fine motor tasks
    (coloring, cutting, writing)

  • Challenges with visual-spatial skills
(letters reversed, trouble copying, difficulty organizing materials)

  • Difficulty with independence in daily routines

“We’ve set goals, surpassed them, created new goals, and continue to find ways to encourage and challenge him.

Casey’s play-based strategy taught us ways to better engage, interact and understand our son. It’s amazing watching him grow and thrive in such a fun, playful and innovative environment. Our experience with Speak Outside the Box has been life changing!

Our speech therapy is play-based, relational, and deeply attuned to a child’s nervous system.

Rather than relying on drills or scripted practice, we follow a child’s present-moment energy and motivation, curating real opportunities for engagement and learning within connection and play with ourselves and the child’s caretakers.

To us, “speech and language” are not just the words a child says. Beneath each expressed idea, answered question, or shared connection lie the foundational building blocks of communication — the intention to communicate, the desire to connect, the ability to process information, problem solve, initiate wants and needs, respond to others, and engage in reciprocal interaction.

We understand that language development does not exist in isolation.

It overlaps with regulation, sensory processing, attention, and a child’s felt sense of safety. When a child feels safe and regulated, they have a greater capacity to get curious, process information, tolerate challenge, and engage meaningfully with others.

We also recognize that communication always involves both a giver and a receiver. For this reason, a child’s communication partners (i.e., parents, teachers, therapists) play an active role in our therapy process. We support parents and caregivers in learning how to co-regulate more effectively, understand what is developmentally appropriate for their child, and respond in ways that strengthen connection and communication.

By prioritizing connection first, we create the conditions where authentic communication can emerge and grow.

You may consider a speech-language evaluation from SOTB if you’re noticing:

  • Limited verbal communication or difficulty expressing wants and needs

  • Difficulty initiating interaction or sustaining back-and-forth conversation

  • Challenges answering questions or processing spoken information

  • Reduced ability to flexibly use of language

  • Difficulty following directions

  • Frustration during communication attempts

  • Limited play skills or difficulty expanding play ideas

  • Trouble with perspective-taking or understanding others’ emotions

  • Articulation concerns (speech sound errors)

  • Difficulty organizing thoughts or telling stories

“We have progressed from a child who would barely speak to clearer communication within a matter of months.”

The help that we have received from SOTB has been life changing for us. I have connected with my child in a way that I had never connected prior. Their entire whole-care approach and dedication to the families that they helps has been something we have never experienced before. We are so grateful.
